One of the core values of EMAS Canada is to make sure we provide more than just a quick fix in the areas in which we serve. The people we serve need local leadership to step up, and serve their communities. This is important because local leaders can lead with the best understanding and sensitivity for the communities in which they live and serve. To do this, education, training and mentorship are tools that produce an enormous payback.
For instance, EMAS Canada’s Scholarship fund is helping local leaders in Africa to make a difference.
Dr. Philip and Nancy Wood have been instructing medical students in DR Congo, assisting in their training and mentoring them in such a way that is hands-on and personal. The Wood’s involvement has meant so much to each student and the funds that the scholarship has provided these students has aided them immensely in furthering their education and helping to provide for their families while they do so. Donors to the scholarship fund can rest assured that their investment into these students is going to go a long way for generations to come, bringing better healthcare and well-being to the communities and patients these students serve, for years to come. Who can tell the ripple effects this may have; or how many lives might be saved and who will be inspired to serve in the same way?

EMAS Canada teams focus on equipping local healthcare professionals who serve the community year-round. For example, members of our teams lecture at local medical schools and conferences during their missions, and while the pandemic has halted in –person teaching for some locations, online teaching was offered and received with much gratitude, by nursing and medical students. Watch this short video presented by Dr. Keith Kwok of the Cambodia team where he explains how the team has continued to teach during the pandemic.
